Figure 3 Numbers of genome-wide Single Nucleotide Polymorphisms (SNPs) detected in seven shark species (white shark, Carcharodon carcharias, bull shark, Carcharhinus leucas, tope, Galeorhinus galeus, basking shark, Cetorhinus maximus, porbeagle, Lamna nasus, shortfin mako, Isurus oxyrinchus, and spurdog, Squalus acanthias), visualized against the species’ genomic distance to the reference genome of C. carcharias. Each data point represents one specimen (see Supplementary File 1, but excluding sample “elasm-11022”). Color according to species’ order (blue: Lamniformes; pink: Squaliformes; black: Carcharhiniformes). Genomic distance was calculated via the cumulative edit distance from the alignments used for SNP-calling, normalized for the total alignment length. SNPs were biallelic, and filtered for missing genotype data < 0.8 and a minimum depth of 5x.
